Celebrating our roles as “everyday heroes” when we support the United Way, a team of superheroes from the United Way of the Central and South Okanagan/Similkameen visited campus to help out with our campaign-launch Pancake Breakfast on October 11.

The 2016 UBC United Way campaign began across both UBC campuses on Tuesday, Oct. 11.Last year’s

Our goals for UBC Okanagan this year are:

  1. Have fun and raise $45,000 to help 3,000 people in our community through United Way-funded charities.
  2. Double the number of people giving by payroll pledge (last year was 5%. and this year we’re aiming for 10% of employees)

Our Okanagan campus campaign began with:

  • A big pancake breakfast fundraiser

(Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the central courtyard).
Our theme this year is “Be a hero” because our community is made of heroes supporting one another.

  • The inaugural Great Pancake Race

(Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. in the central courtyard).
Enter a team of four for a chance to win the coveted Okanagan Gold-coloured Frying Pan. Entry fee is $2 per team member. Costumes encouraged!(Team captains, please submit a list of your team members by Monday, Oct. 10)

Which department will own the Gold Pan this year?

  • A special United Way Pit Stop

Take a Friday morning coffee-break with your colleagues (10 to 11 a.m., Oct. 14) in the University Centre Ballroom (UNC 200). Bring a $2 toonie for the United Way.What’s so special abut this Pit Stop? It features the first-annual Office Triathlon! Enter the games for a $2 donation.

The best golf-putting, paper airplane and bean-bag throwing could earn you an official and highly prized UBC gold (chocolate) medal. And, of course, a year’s worth of bragging rights around the office.

Activities continue through November, too.

  • Nov. 14 is our giant bake sale and cake auction
  • Nov. 15 is is Wear Red Day at both campuses, and the UBC Okanagan Library Book Sale. Donations of books (cookbooks and novels are especially popular), CDs and DVDs, are gratefully accepted at the Library. No textbooks please.
  • Wine Survivor — the month-long strategy game across campus for wine-lovers and Survivor fans
  • A food truck fair
